sadly, i missed the last artomatic. damn house renovations, quitting my day job to start my faux finishing business, getting married, and setting up my studio took too much out of me that year. I had done the two previous artomatics ( old hechinger building, and the epa), and will definitely be a part of the next one.

just stuff

so thanks to craigslist, i now have a free and huge light table/drafting table. i've been rearranging my studio to get it to fit. Seems that everytime i rearrange, i get a little more efficiant and my space feels much better.

I've been cranking out my sculpture and have finally finished a series of low relief wall hangings i was working on. i have 25 pieces and am thrilled about it, and the next few series i have in mind.

I am also wokring on my Scenic Artisans website to make in a proper site. should be up soon.

i have of course been working on some bids, but things are slow now, and i feel that i need to start advertising.

Washington glass school/ Washington sculpture center/ Washington nationals

Patricia is the owner of the building that houses the Washington Sculpture Center
and the Washington Glass School.

Her husband Reinaldo Lopez is an oustanding artist that created the lions outside of the national zoo and on theTaft bridge

he is somewhat of an art hero of mine, and I have only begun to have conversations with him about his skills and techniques.

TheWashingtonn glass school is run by Tim Tate, Erwin Timmers, and Michael Janis.

I have taught a mold making/ casting class there and assist the other teachers as often asI can.
The glass school has been an important influence on me and my work for the last few years.

Sadly both these institutions will be leaving their wonderful studio space, because the DC government is pulling eminentt domain of the land. a 90 day eviction notice has been sent.

Patricia promises that the Sculpture Center will continue and the Glass school has been frantically seeking space. It is doubtful that either will find space in DC proper.

I have strong hopes that if the Washington Glass School finds a new home large enough, that I will set up studio space under their roof.

Anyone got a building we can have?

I went to the open studios at 52 o street.

52 O street is one of the rare pleasures of DC. An entire building of artists studios and live/work spaces.

Seeing work in an artists studio is an unrivalled experience in my books. Where one creates, how one creates, materials and references, and working conditions all come together. A complete picture.

I went into the studios of Betsy Damos,Matt Hollis, Andrea Haffner, Thanasi Papapostolou, and Micheline Kragsbrun Frank.

Thanasi, is by far, the most skilled figurative artist working in realism that I have met in DC. But because it was the same stuff I saw in their open studios last year, I was disappointed. Still the few pieces he has in his studio are very impressive.

Betsy Damos's studio is full of her work in constructions of various materials. Metal wood, concrete. I like her work a lot from a previous visit, but just breezed through this time.

studio is amazingly impressive and includes what seems like her lifetime of work. Piles and piles of drawings, and many paintings. Her work is somewhat mythic, what instantly draws me to it. She also seems to approach the human figure as a landscape in many pieces. Though a bit airy for my bloodlust and heavier taste in art I liked her work. I liked her studio immensely.

Matt Hollis work is by far the most creative work in the building. Though again, it seems like the work I saw last year. I still loved it. He creates soft sculptures in abstracted and non objective forms. Using bright colors and soft fabric, he's created a world in his live/work space that is beautiful. If I had a child, I would want this guy to design the playroom. I want to see large scale versions of this guys work. Maybe set designs. Maybe costumes. His work demand that you interact with it. I respond to his work on a very playful level and would love to see more.

Andrea Haffners work is my favorite of the o street contingent,however. It is simply mesmorizing. i first saw her work at the third Artomatic and was duly impressed with her pendulum like creations. i visited her studio at the open house last year too.
using a tip top secret method, she combines tinted resins with natural materials. her compositions of seeds and pods and leaves and branches and flowers are precious, but the addition of a translucient color field makes it otherworldy and stunning. the group i was with and myself had a hard time leaving her studio. when i win the lottery ( that'd be before i have a child and hire matt hollis for the playroom) i want to commision Andrea to fill a room with her creations. the magical/mysterious/scientific curriosities of her work are as beautiful as they are captivating. And she makes jewewlry out of it. brilliant.
She had photographs too, but i either just freakin love a photograph or i'm nonplussed. since hers were mostly in bins, i didnt work for it. besides, i could have spent five more days gazing at her sculptures, i didnt want to waste my time on the colorless pieces of paper.

Hogg will be "looking to works in the Hirshhorn's collection and will examine the relationship between abstraction and figuration in 20th-century painting. The Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at Northern Virginia Community College, Alexandria Campus, invites proposals for exhibitions in the Margaret W. and Joseph L. Fisher Art Gallery.

Exhibition Dates: 8-10 exhibitions, beginning February 2006.

Proposal Deadline: Proposals must be received by 5:00pm on Thursday, December 1, 2005.

Eligibility: Open to artists and organizations throughout the northern Virginia area. Works can be in both two and three-dimensional formats. Exhibitions may be group or solo.

Entry Procedure: Please submit the following:
* A completed application form with each entry.
* A maximum of 12 slides that represent your work. Slides should be numbered and each should include your name and the title of the piece. Slides should be submitted in a clear plastic slide sleeve.
* A resume.
* A brief description of work to be considered for exhibition attached to application form.
* If you would like your slides returned to you, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope large enough and with enough postage to return them.

Notification: Initial selection will be based on proposals submitted. Final selection may require studio visits. Finalists will be notified by January 6, 2006.

Terms: Artists/organizations are responsible for shipping/delivery/pick-up and preparation of works, as well as any unusual installation requirements. Northern Virginia Community College will insure works while on the premises. Artists must indicate insurance values for all works exhibited.

SCULPTURE UNBOUND will be juried from digital images and slides by Glenn Harper, editor of Sculpture. Mr. Harper was former editor of Art Papers, and has written for Artforum, Public Art Review, and other journals, as well as contributing essays to books and catalogues on the works of artists John Van Alstine, Athena Tacha, and others.

WORK TO BE CONSIDERED: Three-dimensional freestanding sculpture, wall and ceiling hung sculpture, installations, and new media. No pedestals will be provided. Gallery has 8 feet high ceilings, loading dock with standard double door to enter the gallery, movable walls and track lighting. All work accepted and exhibited must remain on display for the full duration of the show.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to members of Washington Project for the Arts/Corcoran and Washington Sculptors Group. Artists who are not already members may join either or both organizations. New members may request a membership form by calling and leaving a name and address or downloading it from the websites: WPA/C 202-639-1828 or WSG 202-686-8696 or Existing members of either group must have paid their dues for 2006 to be eligible for this exhibition.

SALES & INSURANCE: Interested buyers will be directed to WPA/C, which will take a 25% commission on sales. Accepted work will be insured during the exhibition. Insurance is being negotiated. Insurance during transit will be the responsibility of the artist.

DIGITAL IMAGES: Artist must send digital images as an email entry. The artist must include an up to date resume and Image Index including name, address, phone of artist and title, dimensions, materials, date completed and insurance value for no more than 2 entries and no more than a total of 4 images. Each image should be labeled with the artist's last name, first initial and image number 1-4. (WalkerF1, WalkerF2)

this comming week

i only have a few small projects that i can do in my studio. This means that i have a lot of time to work on my sculptures. i just finished cleaning my studio and am looking forward to spending the entire week there!

catching up

i finished my panel painting and am hoping to start on a job in my neighborhood.

i plan to TA a glass sink making class at the glass school tonight ( and make a sink for my bathroom!)
i have some other glass projects that i'd like to get in.

i need to update my slides and apply for a few shows/grants.

and, of course, i have some time again to make some sculpture!

the other night i worked on a project with Rania Hassan and Kirk Waldroff.
I'll post a picture as soon as kirk sends it to me.
