Artomatic 2008 is ending soon!
I'll be giving a tour of Washington Glass School Artists exhibiting at Artomatic on Sunday.
if you're interested, please meet me in the lobby at 1:45. We will start the tour at 2 PM.
There will be bands and performances and workshops all weekend. this is the biggest art event dc has to offer, you'll find something you dig.
i've been toying with some video pieces to introduce my work. i'd like to start doing some techniques oriented ones. i'm actually rather camera shy but i'm trying to get over that.
anyway, heres an intro to my pieces at Artomatic 2008:

thoughts on my work at Artomatic 2008
Remnants of the Age of Enlightenment.

I began a fascination with the use of the traditional lightbulb imagery because of a “ghost light” used in old theatres to keep the ghosts company while the stage was dark. I began correlating that light bulb with my modern retelling of the story of Diogenes, an Athenian Philosopher who walked around with a lantern looking for an honest man. I used an incandescent light instead of an oil lantern. This “seeking” of Diogenes is an inspiration gesture, and I feel exemplary of our daily yearnings for more substance in our lives. Relying on an honest inquiry into the nature of things led western civilization into an age enlightenment. An age I have represented as aged and in a ruinous state.
Glass Panels.

I am fascinated by the use of narrative panels in architecture and the form of my glass panels are inspired by this tradition. As with Remnant of the Age of Enlightenment, I am presenting pieces that have a feeling of relics. Of archeology. Of the study of the past and the way we thought. As if these pieces have been dug up in some distant future to teach the world how we think and feel today.
I liken the presence of glass in my art as the ethereal aspects of our lives. Our soul. Our hopes and d

Artomatic-opolis 500
In the spirit of art cars and kinetic sculpture races, Artomatic is planning its own take on the classic car race with the Artomatic 500 Cardboard Creation Competition on Sunday June 1 at 2pm.
All Artomatic participants are invited to create a cardboard "vehicle" which could be two dimensional, three dimensional -- even four dimensional if you can make it happen -- as long as it it entirely powered by a walking or running human and is decorated by the driver and his or her team.
It might look something like a cross between this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_kajBkhxhc -- and this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxp6kdwKBus&feature=related
With a bit of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGhhls4SJlk
It's up to you.
Final event location is to be determined, but will be on or adjacent to the Artomatic site at 1st&M NE.
Although all the details are not yet ironed out, here are some preliminary guidelines:
* Cars should be primarily made of cardboard. Participants must supply their own paint. Artomatic is looking into a source for cardboard boxes/sheets to offer at cost, but scrounging for refigerator boxes will put you ahead of the game. Anyone with sources/contacts please let me know.
* All locomotion must be provided by one or more humanoid drivers. No engine or propulsion system of any sort is allowed.
* Wheels are optional. In fact, they are discouraged.
* There will likely be some sort of race with laps, as well as a drag race -- which is open to interpretation.
* Winners will be determined by a judging team using points based on some combination of garishness and ingenuity yet to be determined. Some points may be awarded for finishing first or just completion of the race at all. Or not.
* We plan to hold a pre-race build session or two in the unused north side of the Cabaret Stage possibly over Memorial Day weekend-- probably Saturday.
* Entrants will have to sign a release and agree to clean up any mess they make and hold AOM, the building, NoMa etc harmless.
Want to participate? Got some ideas? Want to help organize, be part of
the pit crew, a race official or judge? Contact D&M Co-Chair Sal Ferro, ferro.sal@gmail.com
ya think the dirt from Mars would make a good Pigment?

I'd love to mix some into to some concrete and paint!
