art stuff going on
The summer has been pretty busy and i wanted to catch you up on where and when i'll be showing in the next few months.

Strands that weave through the works of Sean Hennessey and Joanna Knox as they strive to find the mythical, the abstract in our lives. Using diverse media- Sculpture and Photography- they lead us down paths that open our minds, that explore the intangible, that inspire fresh thought.
Through September 7th.
The exhibition gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, when classes are in session. In addition, the gallery is open one hour prior to and during performances.

wanderings.
i've had a pretty heavy mind lately so i wandered around quite a bit yesterday and saw a number of shows. museums always seem to help me focus.
I stopped by the folklife festival, but it was a staff picnic thing and nothing was going on except the food.
so i went to the hirshhorn.
Again, i was utterly disappointed in the hirshhorns selection of shows. there was a while that i was liking every single show i saw their. not so much lately. The show by Wolfgang Tillmans wasnt the worst, but left me feeling very empty.
here is a link to a slide show of his work. There were two more abstracted ( perhaps even non objective) pieces that were nice and somewhat engaging, still i get such a strong feeling of disassociation with these images, and that art of the last few shows i've seen at the hirshhorn. and its a huge show. I looked around a bit more because i always see something that draws me in their collections. I gave up and just as i was heading back to the escalators i saw a piece by Jae Ko whom i had just met last week at her and her husbands studio.

Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

Sometimes looking at recent art makes me feel that the world and human emotion ended after world war II. surely someone has written eloquently about this irony and emotional disassociation that most artists ( and people ) seem to feel the need to play into. hell perhaps i do so myself. not the eloquent writing, but the irony.......
The national gallery has been my indoor respite since i moved to dc. two things i always go look at at are the Madonna and Child with Saint Martina and Saint Agnes by El Greco and The Shaw Memorial. Sometimes the frescoes, but not always.
The El Greco painting is infinitely fascinating to me. I'm not Catholic, but i really feel a religiosity in this piece. Plus i'm insanely intrigued by and in love with the little demon angel on Mary's lef( house left, stage right). Such and odd creature really. she seems more of a misplaced nymph or woodland creature, than an angel of god. maybe thats the same thing...... i feel that shes a bit sinister.
Also, the paint work of el greco was vastly ahead of his time. he has a brilliant combination of passion and a prophetically modern way of using paint. his figures are almost electric in their ethereallity. i certainly like electric...
the Shaw Memorial by Augustus Saint-Gaudens is such a beautiful sculpture... though its not currently on display, but i go by to check each time.
So i wandered around a bit more, actually taking in the entire modern painting section, which i rarely do. i had a different agenda yesterday that i usually do. i was looking for artists interpretations of their personal interactions with their subjects. i only found a few things i was looking for really. some manet pieces stuck me especially. but note all that noteworthy. perhaps i'll pursue this a bit more some other time.
I went into the Desiderio da Settignano exhibit Its a pretty good show and i would recommend going to check this out.
Also on display are the works by Claude Lorrain. lots of drawings, prints and a few paintings. except for some great etchings of shipwrecks, i was pretty nonplussed.
I did go and pay closer attention to the muses in the east hallway of the west building. i havent done really any figurative artwork in about 5 years, but have been feeling very drawn to it again.
Since i felt myself thinking that way, and suddenly having the urge to work more with the figure, actually having things to say with the figure... i thought i'd had over to the portrait gallery.
I checked out nearly every room. including every isle of the luce center. i skipped the "champions " show however.
I mostly checked out the figurative work, but i always admire the 3rd floor of the portrait gallery. and the fact that they have a balcony cafe.
i think its safe to say that i probably be doing a series of figurative works in the near future.....
as dull and old fashioned as that may be.

ballston arts market tomorrow!
The market runs from 10am-4pm on Saturday and the free concert starts between 12-1 and runs 2 hours.
If you're coming from DC, take the orange line to Ballston and cross N. Stuart Street. You can also take the 38B which starts at Farragut Sq. and travels through Georgetown and over the Key Bridge, ending at Ballston Metro.

Whats been going on?
I havent posted that much lately, but i don't really have a good excuse as to why.
-Artomatic is now over and was a fairly busy event for me. In addition to exhibiting and being there for as many events as i could, i also organized an artists market to set up for three sundays. AOM is an extemely rewarding experience and i would encourage all artists to participate in it when it comes around again.
-I had two weekend workshops that i've recently taught and were quite succesful.
-Rania and i set up at a craft show in baltimore.
-We're doing the Ballston Arts and crafts Market this saturday in Ballston, VA.
-Pile of Craft in Baltimore at the end of the month.
-i've been posting a bunch of art on my etsy.com gallery. look at my amazing feedback!
- I've moved out of my studio in mount rainier and am currently working out of my house.
- I have a show at Black Rock arts center coming up.
August15- September 7th, with an artists reception on August 18th.

Open Studios today! Artomatic Closes tomorrow!
two great art events in one weekend!

All of the Gateway District Artists will be hosting open studios this saturday from 12-5.
This will be my last open studio in this location, so please come by.

You will see a group a white warehouses. I am located between the two that are next to each other.

My Artomatic Favorites ( top 8 and counting....)
so far, these are some of my favorites from Artomatic 2007.
I'll fine tune this list and add a few more to get an obligatory top 10.
1. Veronica Szalus- metal spikes,paper and plaster: perfect combination.
2. Novie trump- Novie's series of ceramic sculpture is beautiful. great textures, wonderful themes. skilled execution. i'm a big fan of Novie's work.
3. Rebecca Gordon- Ant-O-Matic. just because it's insane.
4. Laurel Lukaszewski - Laurel is a studio mate of mine and seeing her work everyday is inspiring. it has this wonderful ordered craziness to it. so structured but expelling radical ions. i really like Laurel's work and this installation is a smart use of her space.
5. Elizabeth Lundberg Morisette- This is a perfect installation. wrapping around the column in front of big windows. smells wonderfully of beeswax. powdercoated paper. Stunning to see and smell.
6. Sergio OlivosM- i like his use of wax and burnt objects. the organic quality of his work really appeals to me. I respond to these on a very visceral level.
7. Cory Oberndorfer:
because whoever can combine both these images in one presentation rocks. look at the egg!
8.Joanna Knox i'm especially excited that i'll be having an exhibit with this photographer later in the year. Her work has a clean but eerie feeling. shes seems to use white much like Andrew Wyeth.....and in a way that parallels my limited use of color, in my mind anyway. Nonetheless her imagery is intriguing.there is a quiet desolation i enjoy.

Its a graphite drawing straight on the wall. I'm a big fan of installation painting.... so this is kinda up my alley. I don't know who did it. *Alexandra Silverthorne mentions that its John Adams*

There are a bunch of encaustic artists too that i'm really digging on:
Sondra Arkin, who has an opening of MORE work at Nevin Kelly gallery on thursday.
and this artist, whose name i don't recall:
then there was the person that did this piece:
though i thought that only two of them had much bite.
There weren't too many straight up painters than were doing incredible work, but these paintings by Claudia Olivos were beautiful, especially displayed together. i'm afraid that if you buy her work, you'll have to buy 5 or six paintings to display next to each other
There are a number of other excellent artists, but are either good friends of mine, or my wife, so i can't really add them to my top ten, even though their work is new and exciting.

All in all i think that this years Artomatic has the most professional vibe to it, though perhaps at the expense of experimentalism. Its very well put together, the presentations are tight. There are some artists that have retained the energy from the original AOM at the Manhatten Laundry, but more have moved on and it seems that the energy of AOM has changed altogether.
I wager that Art Outlet will fill the experimental niche........
