Cultural Development Corporation (CuDC) has partnered with The Cohen Companies and Union Place Phase I, LLC to develop 30 affordable live/work housing units for artists and their families at the Loree Grand — 250 K Street NE, in the NoMa area of Washington, DC.
Live/work artist housing are apartments that are primarily designed for living, with studio/work space as an ancillary use. Employees and walk-in trade are regulated by your Home Occupation Permit.

About the Loree Grand at Union Place
The building, with move-in beginning June 2010, will feature studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and two-bedroom with den units. Units range from 596 to 1362 square feet. Additionally, nine of the units, located on 3rd Street, feature entryways with direct street access as either walk-down or walk-up units. Units are priced to be affordable to households earning a maximum of 80% ofArea Median Income (AMI). A detailed schedule of eligible incomes and rental rates is available below. Area Median Income (AMI) is the annual median income level for the Washington, DC metropolitan area, as calculated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The 2009 AMI for the metro area is $102,000 for a four person household.
All units feature stainless steel appliances, granite countertops andwasher and dryers. In addition to these in unit amenities, the 200 unit project includes a courtyard, green roof, a gym and retail — all just over 2 blocks away from the Florida Avenue Metro Station and Union Station.
The Process
CuDC will lease units on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE BASIS. Interested households may begin submitting applications at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 17, 2010. CuDC will continue to accept applications until 5 p.m. on Friday, May 28, 2010. Applications may be mailed or hand-delivered to 916 G Street NW, Washington, DC 20001. CuDC’s offices are open Monday – Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. Join us on Saturday, May 8th from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. for on Open House at Loree Grand to see the units in person. PROJECT INFORMATION:

Dance Place and Artspace are partnering to

create a $13 million arts campus in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Artspace will break ground on 41 affordable live/work units for artists and their families along with gallery and studio space.

Artspace is assisting Dance Place,Washington, D.C.'s most prolific presenter of modern dance, to build a new performance and rehearsal space, an education center and administrative space.

The Grand Opening is scheduled for June 2011.

How do I qualify for an affordable housing unit?

Artpace follows all federal fair housing guidelines. To qualify for aunit, your income must be at 60% of the DC metro area median income or below. For 2008, the combined household incomes must be at or below:

• $41,340 for a single person
• $47,220 for two persons
• $53,160 for three persons
• $59,040 for four persons

The project will include a mix of efficiencies,

one and two bedroom units. Rents will be below market and established at the time of lease up.

What is the definition of an artist to qualify for a unit?

Artist is defined as:

• A person who works in, or is skilled in any of the fine arts, including but not limited to, painting, drawing, sculpture, book arts, printmaking, and mixed-media.

 

• A person who creates imaginative works of aesthetic value, including but not limited to literature, poetry, photography, music composition, choreography, architecture, film and video.

 

• A person who creates functional art, including but not limited to metal, textiles, paper, wood, ceramic, glass or plastic objects.

• A performer or theatrical artist, including but not limited to, singers, dancers, musicians, actors, performance artists, costume, lighting, sound, and set designers.

 

• In all art disciplines, a designer, technician, craftsperson, teacher or administrator who is dedicated to using their expertise within the community to support, promote, present, and/or teach and propagate their art form through events, activities, performances and classes.

2010 WPA PUBLIC ART RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Public Talk: Tuesday, April 6, 2010 4-6PM at the Corcoran Gallery of Art Auditorium


Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCAAH) are
partnering with Socrates Sculpture Park (SSP, the Park) in Long Island City, NY to create a Public Art
Residency (PAR) Program to instruct and inform artists about practical and conceptual issues related to
the creation of public art. Through this program, artists will learn the fundamentals of developing a
proposal for public art work, identifying sources for materials and funding of projects, and access a
support network for technical assistance and future opportunities related to creating and presenting art
in the public realm.

In this pilot program, one artist who resides in the District of Columbia will be selected to receive a two
month paid residency and exhibition opportunity at Socrates Sculpture Park. The work will be
exhibited under SSP's "Open Space" program from September 12, 2010 to November 2010
(end/deinstallation date to be determined and agreed upon by the artist and SSP). Once the exhibit has
ended, the artist will re-fabricate or re-install, in Washington, DC, the work made through the
residency. The artist will be required to give a public presentation about his or her residency experience
and may also be asked to advise WPA and/or DCCAH on other public art initiatives.


ABOUT SOCRATES SCULPTURE PARK
Socrates Sculpture Park was an abandoned landfill and illegal dumpsite until 1986 when a coalition of
artists and community members, under the leadership of sculptor Mark di Suvero, transformed it into an
open studio and exhibition space for artists and a neighborhood park for local residents. The Park is an
innovative public/private partnership that has become an internationally renowned outdoor museum
and artist residency program that also serves as a vital New York City park offering a wide variety of free
public programs.

Located in an industrial neighborhood in Long Island City, Socrates is a waterfront park that overlooks
the Manhattan skyline; the site is an affecting and inspiring place for artists to work and a spectacular
setting for the presentation of public art. To date, Socrates has hosted close to 800 artists and currently
attracts more than 78,000 visitors annually. Socrates Sculpture Park's existence is based on the belief
that reclamation, revitalization and creative expression are essential to the survival, humanity and
improvement of our urban environment.

Socrates Sculpture Park is the only site in the New York Metropolitan area specifically dedicated to
providing artists with opportunities to create and exhibit large-scale sculpture and multi-media
installations in an outdoor environment that invites interaction between artists, artworks and the public.
Socrates is a laboratory where experimentation and innovation expand, reinvent and redefine the tradition of art in public spaces. To learn more about the Park, please visit their website:

ARTIST ELIGIBILITY
This opportunity is open to all artists who live in the District of Columbia. Artists who are enrolled in a
school, college or university at the time of the residency (May - September 2010) are not eligible for the
PAR Program.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
For this pilot program, WPA, DCCAH, and SSP will select one artist from an open call to receive financial support in the amount of $4,500 ($2,500 production grant + $2,000 living/travel stipend), a residency in the SSP outdoor studio, and access to facilities, materials, equipment and technical assistance to create a work for exhibition at SSP to coincide with the Park's annual Emerging Artist Fellowship Exhibition. The selected artist will also be given (by SSP) limited administrative assistance to conduct additional fundraising for his/her project, procure in-kind support, and pursue future commissions, residencies and placement for his/her work. The selected artist will have to make their own living and travel arrangements.

Artists interested in this opportunity are asked to submit a proposal for an artwork to be created and
exhibited at SSP. Artists applying for this opportunity are strongly encouraged to visit SSP and/or
attend the public talk by SSP Executive Director Alyson Baker at the Corcoran Gallery of Art Auditorium on April 6, 2010 from 4-6pm before submitting their application. The auditorium is located
at 500 Seventeenth Street NW, Washington, DC.

Applicants must take into account the site's rugged, urban outdoor environment and be aware that
sculptures installed in the Park must meet safety requirements and be able to withstand the effects of
weather and public use. Visiting the site will give applicants a clearer idea of the factors that affect
installations at the Park and an overview of the facilities that the Park has to offer, including the tools
and equipment available in the studio and the materials and resources available in Long Island City.

Studio Coordinator Position Open

TheWashington Glass School has an immediate opening for a Studio Coordinator in its Mount Rainier, MD location. Founded 8 years ago, this is one of the busiest studios on the east coast. We are not only an educational venue, but we are the home of many successful independent artists as well. We also work heavily with large scale public art projects.

The successful candidate will have many of the following traits:

• Extremely organized and punctual

• Ability to move from one project to the next very quickly

• Be a self starter and able to work independently

• Skills in sculpting clay would be helpful…..as well as skills in computer work, administrative paper work, warm glass, shipping and delivery

• Comfortable with people and able to possibly teach classes in future.

Duties will include:

• Daily studio clean-ups

• Working with plaster, lost wax, warm glass

• Installing sculptural work

• Assisting/coordination or taking over some classes
  
• Coordinating kiln use and kiln schedules
• Review studio material use
  
• 100 things that might come up….and do.

  
  

What we offer:

• To learn numerous methods of relating to glass and sculpture (all classes are free to you)

• Free studio space to work on your warm glass

• $10 an hour to start

The Urban Forest Project

Call for Artists: Participate in the Urban Forest Project

This spring, The Urban Forest Project will plant 100 street banners by local designers and students in downtown Washington, DC. Each banner will use the form of, or metaphor for a tree, to make a powerful visual statement about the environment. This project is being brought to Washington, DC as a platform to engage the public in the District's environmental efforts.

The banners will be hung on light poles in downtown Washington, DC during the spring of 2010 in celebration of Arbor and Earth Days. They will then be recycled into unique one-of-a-kind totebags designed exclusively for the project. Proceeds from the sales of the totebags will go to nonprofit environmental efforts that help make Washington, DC a clean, green and sustainable city.

This project, conceived by Worldstudio, is being presented in Washington, DC in collaboration with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH), AIGA DC and Corcoran College of Art and Design.

This Saturday is our 8th Annual Holiday Party/Sale and Open House! Always our biggest event of the year! Dozens of glass artists will be showing in the studio....plus holiday food and music. Sculpture, video, bowls, jewelry.......tons of great artwork to purchase!

Plus this year, we have joined with all the other Mt. Rainier artists....so all the studios in our complex will also have their doors open. Painting, sculpture, ceramics......its all here at the largest cluster of professional artist in the area!
