i just heard on npr that there is a group of people trying to get the capitol building visitor center named after the artist,Constantino Brumidi, who did much of the painting inside.
that kinda warmed my heart to hear.

UPDATE:
here's a post blurb about it
also talk of it on rebuilding place in the urban space

I used to love going into the Capitol rotunda to sit, contemplate the painting but especially the Apotheosis of Washington. Haven't been in that room since August 17, 2001. I tried to go with a tour group but wasn't allowed to go stand in the middle of the room and look up, so I gave up. There are other beautiful rooms in DC, like the big reading room in the Jefferson Building, but I just love the Capitol Dome, where the 4 quarters of this powerful, wounded city come together. I miss having access to that space.
