panels i'll be painting

my current project involves an office in a home that is completely covered with maple panels.
i have chosen to paint the paneled sections and the frames, while using a tinted wax on the remaining walls.


the tinted wax will push the background toward a plum/eggplant color, while the panels with be painted with ochres, corals and aqua colors.
it will have a suggestion of a continous landscape. the ceiling will be painted a very very soft bluish green, suggesting either sky or water.


much of the detail will be painted metallic silver.

i went to the Fraser Gallery on friday and saw the opening of their recent show by Mark Jenkins


i really enjoyed this show, which included a full scale tape version of his honda!

i have a stack of old paintings i need to get around to selling. i find that a clear studio makes me more productive as i wish to fill it up.

another is attempting to do thin polymerized concrete/fiberglass, to achieve lightweight castings. its working! im very excited by this, but i dont have a picture to prove it it.

Dupont Circle First Friday

I know it's august, and generally DC galleries don't have their prime stuff up. Still. i jumped around to a few galleries last night in an attempt to find some art. It's really not right when the architectural details of the dupont rowhouse galleries far surpass anything they have on the walls.
I know that i'm a big fan of architectural details, but i do love art works. they just seem harder to to come by.


Having said that, i only went to a handful and not all the galleries. Its just that bad art zaps my energy, so my wife and a friend of ours went to get a drink and talk about our own work. much more inspiring.

Del Rey

I went to Del Rey last night to see "Splash" at the Del Rey Artisans.

and Karen Schmitz


I have seen Susan's work for a number of years now, but was really impressed with her paint work in rendering fabric. She uses lush oils and has a soft touch for this, while genreally her compositions are tight, crisp,and orderly.

Jen's photographs focuse on close ups of natural materials. shells, fish, flowers...etc... . While i am generally not the most appreciating enthusiast of photography, i liked staring at her work. It has a subtle elegance to it.


Karen's work included prints and paintings. i didnt take too much notice of her paintings but i thought her prints were terrific. Nice, gestural, somewhat violent, non-objective polychromatic pieces. I get the sense that she has a lot of fun making art.


The opening reception for SPLASH will be held Friday, August 5 (7-10:00 PM). The exhibit will run through Sunday, August 28, 2005. Gallery hours are Saturdays 10:00 AM-4:00 PM, and Sundays Noon–4:00 PM. For more information contact: SPLASH





also, Del Rey has a third thursday happening. TONS of people were out. its not so arts related an evening as the third thursday on 7th street, still. its nice to see more people than cars on the street. VERY happening spot, that del rey. especially if you are a toddler. of which there were millions and millions.
