Visual Music at the Hirshorn
Exhibit Info
i went to see this exhibit the other day. I was overwhelmingly disappointed.I guess for one, im not a fan of art inspired by art. even if different media. the concept of it i find questionable, and its execution is often poor. Also, this exhibit included early works of film and video pieces. some computer based stuff. I found it very dull. It got me theorizing to myself that perhaps technological based art is usually not at its best (albeit original) in its infancy. though i'm still working this idea out in my mind, it seems that a tradition of craft needs to be established in any medium, before the realization of an art form may blossom.
So at least this exhibit made me think of that.
Also, no trip to the hirshorn is complete for me anymore unless i visit "the big boy", by Ron Mueck.
still disconcerting.

artscape in baltimore
this saturday i headed to artscape with a few friends. Despite being a very large festival with lots of art, it seemed more of a celebration of fried pork products and rather dull music. nonetheless, there were thousands of people out and it was a nice day. Plus i love baltimore. my new favorite neighbrohoods are Hampdon and the north station arts district. here are some snaps:

taught
I taught my workshop this past weekend. I spent WAY more prep time filled with anxiety that i had anticipated. I think it went well. I'm particulalry critical about myself when i feel that things arent flowing as smoothly as possible. BUT, considering that i never taught before, i'd say it was acceptable. I did learn ways to improve my teaching style and how to make the class run better if they let me teach it again.
Some one the students seemed interested in a more advanced approach to mold making.
nonetheless, for begginer students, i need to remember that i should explain everything in more detail. for instance, i had assumed that mixing plaster was something everyone in the world has done. or measuring materials on an electronic gram scale.
Also, i forgot to bring one hand out that detailed the forton mg process. i think that was my biggest mistake.

teaching
i teach a class tomorrow. i've never done this before and am a bit nervous about how it will go over. Its an introduction to mold making and casting. flexible rubber molds, cement and fiberglass. its a lot to go over and im worried that my students wont walk away with quality finished pieces. I'm working out ways to make it fool proof. still.
we'll see how it goes.

seven at warehouse.
I went to the opening of Seven at the warehouse cafe the other night. Here's a piece i liked:
We saw some flyers for something new that has taken over the old sgnal 66 space.
Its a printmakers workshop. You can pay to use the space. Seems like a great venture, and i was pretty thrilled to see it.
