Studio Coordinator Position Open

TheWashington Glass School has an immediate opening for a Studio Coordinator in its Mount Rainier, MD location. Founded 8 years ago, this is one of the busiest studios on the east coast. We are not only an educational venue, but we are the home of many successful independent artists as well. We also work heavily with large scale public art projects.

The successful candidate will have many of the following traits:

• Extremely organized and punctual

• Ability to move from one project to the next very quickly

• Be a self starter and able to work independently

• Skills in sculpting clay would be helpful…..as well as skills in computer work, administrative paper work, warm glass, shipping and delivery

• Comfortable with people and able to possibly teach classes in future.

Duties will include:

• Daily studio clean-ups

• Working with plaster, lost wax, warm glass

• Installing sculptural work

• Assisting/coordination or taking over some classes
  
• Coordinating kiln use and kiln schedules
• Review studio material use
  
• 100 things that might come up….and do.

  
  

What we offer:

• To learn numerous methods of relating to glass and sculpture (all classes are free to you)

• Free studio space to work on your warm glass

• $10 an hour to start

• The ability to see how a very successful sculpture studio operates.

• Many gallery and show opportunities.

The Urban Forest Project

Call for Artists: Participate in the Urban Forest Project

This spring, The Urban Forest Project will plant 100 street banners by local designers and students in downtown Washington, DC. Each banner will use the form of, or metaphor for a tree, to make a powerful visual statement about the environment. This project is being brought to Washington, DC as a platform to engage the public in the District's environmental efforts.

The banners will be hung on light poles in downtown Washington, DC during the spring of 2010 in celebration of Arbor and Earth Days. They will then be recycled into unique one-of-a-kind totebags designed exclusively for the project. Proceeds from the sales of the totebags will go to nonprofit environmental efforts that help make Washington, DC a clean, green and sustainable city.

This project, conceived by Worldstudio, is being presented in Washington, DC in collaboration with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH), AIGA DC and Corcoran College of Art and Design.

Plus this year, we have joined with all the other Mt. Rainier artists....so all the studios in our complex will also have their doors open. Painting, sculpture, ceramics......its all here at the largest cluster of professional artist in the area!

I recently joined the James Renwick Alliance and went to my first meeting last night.

Like a lot of solid arts organizations they seem to be lacking in a younger membership base. I've found the same thing with the Washington Sculptors Group, of which i am a board member.

Anyway, we got a tour from their awesome curator Nicholas Bell and a great talk about a new glass sculpture they are acquiring.

I will also be participating in their James Renwick Alliance Day, a one day sale of artwork from the members.

Competition deadline is Friday, October 9.


Attention Artists! Here's your chance to apply for free studio space at the historic Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower, worth $24,000. With the support of Baltimore philanthropists Eddie and Sylvia Brown, one studio in the building, the Brown Studio, is offered free of charge to an emerging visual artist for a period of two years.
The Brown Studio, offered only as a work space, is located on the building's second floor and features large windows and 360 sq. feet of space. The building amenities include high speed Internet access, 24-hour secure access, and year-round climate control.

The Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower is located at 21 South Eutaw Street.

Applicants for the Brown Studio must be able to demonstrate an established artistic practice by presenting a CD of representative work and a resume. In addition, applicants must submit a completed application and a $25 non-refundable application fee.


The application for the Brown Studio at the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower is due on Friday, October 9, 2009. The Brown artist will be announced on October 30, 2009. The tenancy will begin on or about December 1, 2009, and conclude on November 30, 2011.

The applications will be reviewed by an independent jury.
