DC Public Art

Artistic Bike Rack Dedication

Mayor Fenty and Councilmember Wells to Join DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the District Department of Transportation for

Bike Rack Dedication

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities in collaboration with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Well's will mark the completion of twenty-eight artistically designed bike racks by six local artists.

The artists whose designs were selected are Matt Barinholtz, Karin Edgett, William Gordon, Carolina Mayorga, Melinda Merinsky and Joe Sutliff. All six bike rack designs will be displayed at the dedication event.

The DC Creates Public Art Artistic Bike Rack proposal invited local artists to enhance the city’s standard bike racks and create unique designs that could be placed in locations city-wide. Artists were encouraged to incorporate their interpretation of the “DC experience” into their artwork as well as consider particular locations for the placement of the work. The intent of the project is to encourage more people to use bicycles and increase the number of bike racks throughout the city that are both functional and artistic.
